National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research
This interactive online registry is a database of diet and physical activity measures relevant to childhood obesity research. Types of measures in this registry are questionnaires, instruments, diaries, logs, electronic devices, direct observation of people or environments, protocols and analytic techniques. Details about each measure include validity, reliability, protocols for use, as well as settings, geographic areas, and populations in which the measure has been used. Users can search for measures and details about how to use them, find measures in development, link to other measures registries and related resources, and submit new measures for inclusion. Measures of the Food Environment

National Cancer Institute

This Web site provides a compilation of articles that include community-level measures of the food environment, as well as some of the instruments themselves. Preventing Chronic Disease

The July 2010 edition of Preventing Chronic Disease featured a set of essays and commentaries on selecting the best tools, or metrics, for measuring and monitoring the health of communities. The essays describe the characteristics of ideal metrics and explore their use in measuring various indicators of a community’s health, including health outcomes, health inequalities, health behaviors, health care access and quality; socioeconomic indicators, environmental factors; public health policies. Survey of Child-care Providers of 2-5 Year Old Children

The survey was designed to be self-completed by child-care providers of 2-5 year old children at preschools, centers or family daycare homes. Adapted from the NAP SACC tool validated by Benjamin et al (2007), it assesses practices related to both feeding (28 items) and physical activity (13 items). Added was a frequency checklist of 21 foods and beverages served to children on the day preceding the survey, including those provided by the site and those brought by parents, listed by eating occasion (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack). The survey format, wording and length were pilot-tested with a convenience sample of 8 child-care providers. It takes approximately 20 minutes to complete and is available in English and Spanish at: cwh.berkeley.edu. View the survey.
 
Wellness School Assessment Tool

The Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity, Yale University

The Wellness School Assessment Tool (WellSAT) is an online evaluation of school wellness policies that address nutrition education and promotion, physical activity/physical education, school meals and competitive foods. It is the first instrument of its kind, providing a quantitative assessment that can be used to track progress over time. For details and to use the tool visit www.WellSAT.org.
