The U.S. Department of Agriculture released updated nutrition standards for school meals. The new meal requirements will raise standards for the first time in more than fifteen years, and help schools provide healthier breakfasts and lunches for nearly 32 million children who participate in school meal programs. In part, the final standards ensure that school meals include more fruits and vegetables, more whole-grain breads and pastas, and offer only low- and non-fat milk. They also set limits for fat and sodium and limit calories based on the age of children being served.
